The ordination of Bishop Iyad Twal on Feb. 28, 2025, at the Church of the Baptism of Christ in Jordan marked a historic and symbolic moment, as he became the first patriarchal vicar of Jordan to be ordained on Jordanian soil.

Appointed by Pope Francis during a time of regional upheaval—including the genocide in Gaza —Twal’s elevation underscores Jordan’s vital role in preserving Christian presence and promoting peaceful coexistence in the Holy Land. With deep roots in both Jordan and Palestine, and years of pastoral and academic service, Twal embodies the Church’s commitment to unity and contextual theology across borders.

“We are different but we stand together,” Twal said. “Because theology is rooted in each country and language.”
